Solar panels

We located solar panels for heating our Embassy pool and hot water usage. 24 panels work for pool and 4 panels work for hot water. It is environmentally friendly, renewable and non-polluting.

Rainwater cisterns

Our Consulate-General garden has a cistern, which has been re-activated by connecting pipes from the roof, to enable the collection of rain-water. This cistern is used for watering the garden.

Recycling

We have several recycling points in our Embassy and Consulate for paper, plastics, glass, and metal.  Staff make good use of these facilities and even bring in waste from home.

Composting plants

 
We recycle plant clippings and waste for composting. Instead of throwing the extra clippings and pieces away, we grind them to make compost that can be used for plants to grow in the future.

Environmental procurement

We purchase environmental friendly products:

1. Energy efficient bulbs
   We have replaced our bulbs with energy efficient ones.
2. Tap water saving devices
   Consulate General has located water saving taps. The devices help to save 2 / 3 of the water used.
3. Cleaning materials
   All cleaning materials such as toilet papers, towels are environmental friendly.
4. Degradable bags
   Bags in rubbish bins and recycling bins are all degradable and environmental friendly.
5. Compost caddy
   We turn our kitchen waste into nutritious fertiliser by composting in our kitchens.
6. Water saver bags for toilet flush
   We located water saver bags into toilet cistern to save 2.5-3.5 litres of water at every flush.
7. Solar lamps for Residence
   We have purchased solar lamps for back residence garden lighting.
8. Solar pump for the fountain
   With our solar pump, we allow our fountain to be powered by the sun.

Environmental awareness

We try to raise awareness on environmental issues Turkey wide.

1. Strategy
   We outlined a draft strategy for what we have consumed, and how we could reduce our consumption.
2. Carbon footprint
   We have identified our carbon footprint by calculating our energy consumption on water, gas, electricity, and travel. Our figures helped a lot to raise awareness of all staff-Turkey wide.
3. Greening competition
   We have organised a greening competition in order to brainstorm of the staff on environmental issues. We have rewarded the winners at the end of the practice.
4. Posters
   We have various posters all around the Embassy to raise awareness.
5. Thermometers
   We have distributed to all staff a warning thermometer to raise awareness on heating.

Events

We have organised the Pera house party environmentally friendly in liaison with an environmental NGO.
